The Basic Values of the Catholic Church
True Unchanging Word of God
Having heard the view expressed within the Church that the 'Word of God' is not actually the 'Word of God' but of man I asked a priest for his thoughts.
He told me that the Word was written by man and had to be an evolving Word to match the times we lived in. He said that God was a God of love and would forgive literally anything. I said to him that I believed in the mercy of God and whilst we cannot judge anyone we have a responsibility to proclaim the truth whether we be cleric or lay.
What he said to me confirmed in my mind by some clerics of all levels within the church that Hell itself does not exist.
However the Catechism of the Catholic Church states
“The teaching of the church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, ‘eternal fire.’ The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs” (No. 1035).
He also said that in his view the church in the past went too heavy in its attitude to matters of a sexual nature. He cited Humanae Vitae as an example of what he meant. I said to him as a Catholic who accepted Humanae Vitae the alternative of accepting artificial methods of contraception both then and now fill me with dread. I said that I believed chastity, purity, and self control were important in a christian life following the will of God.
He also felt that the Church's attitude to same sex relationships should change given his belief that 'people are born that way' His companion who to that stage said nothing said that whilst that might be true in some cases it was for many a lifestyle choice.
In the end we agreed to differ accepting we had a loving God.
The difference between us could be summed up in the Gospel story of the woman taken in adultery who was on the verge of being stoned to death when Jesus came on the scene. Knowing they were trying to catch him in a trap, Jesus bent down and began writing on the ground with his finger. They persisted in questioning him until Jesus stood up and said: "Let any of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
Then he resumed his bent position to write again on the ground. One by one, from oldest to youngest, the people slipped away quietly until Jesus and the woman were left alone.
Straightening up again, Jesus asked, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
She replied, "No one, sir."
"Then neither do I condemn you," stated Jesus.
My priest friend would say that this illustrated his point about a loving God forgiving our human failures.
No mention of the concluding words of Jesus -
"Go now and sin no more"
I just wonder if the thinking of the modernists in the Church really believe Jesus suffered. If they realise it was not Roman Soldiers driving in the nails on His sacred hands and feet but our sins.
Given developments within certain clerics up to and including Cardinal level Our Lady's warning about Satan infiltrating to the highest echelons of the Church is happening and has been happening for some time - and I am not just referring to the abuse of minors.
It is even more important we attend Mass; devotions to the Blessed Sacrament and recite the Rosary daily to protect the Church of God as Our Blessed Mother requested.
My concluding comment to my friend was that if I believed what he said then the death of many martyrs who would not compromise on the Word of God was in vain!
